You can ask mysqld where it looks for its configuration files.  Here's
a Debian system:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ mysql --help --verbose | grep cnf
/etc/mysql/my.cnf ~/.my.cnf /usr/etc/my.cnf
