I know that migrating to MySQL 5 and PHP 5 would need quite some resources, but I also think that adapting those old sources for current compilers might need a similar amount of resources.
I do not think your current approach will take less effort than the migration to current versions. Consider that the information about your old versions is phasing out too, so staying with these versions would lead into a dead row.
