Info needed!

I need to run a query from a java program to :
1) get the list of tables in a particular db]
2) get the desc of each table in the list I get
Can I use the show tables; and desc tablename as a query to get the desired RESULTSET 
in java(sql package) ??

Plz do respond at hte earliest!
