mysql was compiled for FreeBSD 4.4-Stable with the following
configuration options:
CFLAGS="-mpentiumpro -pipe" ./configure \
--enable-thread-safe-client \
--enable-assembler \
--without-debug \
--with-charset=cp1251 \
--with-extra-charsets=koi8_ru

Sorry, guys, I'm not developer so far. As far as I can figure out,
this is some sort of locale problem and it is really minor one.
