usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld --user = mysql &
or ./safe_mysqld --user = mysql &
Have a look at /mysql/bin/var/hostname.err.log

Hope this helps

Subject: How to start the MySQL server

Dear friends,

I'm running RedHat Linux, I just downloaded the ~.tar.gz mysql file in my
/usr/local directory and uncompressed it.

Now I can get the target directory but I don't know how to start the server.

I tried:
     ./bin/safe_mysqld --user=root &
but it doesn't work for me.

Any help is warmly welcome.

Regards,
Yao
