Not really. Try looking in /usr/local/mysql/bin where on most *nixs the start-up script resides (safe_mysqld). To modify it there is a file called /etc/rc.local (or rc.local). See if this has been altered. There is also the error log called hostname.err which will give you (and anybody else trying to help) a more verbose message than the one you've posted.
