Though I did not install gcc 3.2, I did try everything in the message above, and the result was exactly the same. I would love to convince the powers that be that we should upgrade this box to Linux, if not FreeBSD, but unfortunately I don't think it'll be possible. I do agree with the sentiment expressed in the message above that the Manual should not say that it's simple to install on Solaris. Any other suggestions still welcome, thanks to everyone for their time.
