Leave the mysq.sock alone.Although it is a special file it may just work this way. Also make the permissions to "chmod 777 mysql.sock" and "chown mysql.mysql mysql.sock"
If you did any of the above, make sure that the server is not running, and delete
the mysql.sock.
The server will create it properly when it starts, and remove it when it stops.
