If you have installed MySql in some non-standard location, or if the original installation was from the OS install, it may be that you need to link the socks.
I have done this, others will probably complain. I had this problem on many systems newly installed. I fixed it with ln -s /var/lib/path/to/mysql.sock /tmp/mysql.sock ~Kelly W.
