Hi Thomas,
   This would be a question for your OS support list,  however an
example from FreeBSD:

bash-2.04$ sysctl -a | grep files
kern.maxfiles: 20000
kern.maxfilesperproc: 19000
kern.openfiles: 1569
bash-2.04$ su
tuvok# sysctl kern.maxfiles=20001
kern.maxfiles: 20000 -> 20001
tuvok#
