at first when trying to run mysql it did this:

[root@shadow mysql]# bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql &
[1] 3124
[root@shadow mysql]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
021121 02:27:42 mysqld ended

[1]+ Done bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql

then, i stopped mysql and gave the command again and it seemed to work:
[root@shadow mysql]# bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql &
[1] 5456
[root@shadow mysql]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql

however, when trying to connect to mysql it does this still:

Enter password:
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

any help appreciated
