It's the next step after beta - ie it's release quality, but hasn't been in release that long. Therefore it's probably not been deployed in production by that many people.
Bear in mind that even alpha versions have undergone and completely passed the full set of regression tests. After a period of time in gamma, where bug reports have tailed off, it is finally called "Stable".
