chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql
Substitute the actual location where mysql stores its data files.

ps ax | grep mysql
at your shell...this will give a list of
processes that are associated with
mysql.
Then type
kill 1234 1235
where 1234 and 1235 are the process numbers of
the processes returned by ps.
