Use Linux to Linux makes life easier, because Microsoft doesn't seem to like Linux (although some ms code is in it (dhcp)).
Windows 98 out the box configures TCP usage for a 56K modem from what I've read. Use the program linked below to switch from modem settings to LAN settings.
