Hi Toby If Apache, PHP and MySQL are all sitting on the same box, try connecting to the loopback address and see if the problem goes away.
Up until recently, I was running a similar setuo and I always used to connect to 127.0.0.1 and had no hassles, so I am hoping that this might fix the problem...
