My background is in software design, not documentation. Additionally, one of my clients asked me to fix
a SCO OpenServer crash for them today and wouldn't let me use a chainsaw or sledgehammer, so I'm a bit out
of it.

This seems a bit confusing. On one hand, it says that updates don't fail, but on the other hand it says they are stalled until ALTER TABLE is done executing. Am I going blind/loosing my mind (a possibility I am open to) or do others agree with me?
The manual describes the way ALTER TABLE works accurately.
