Well, I know you stated that you do not find M$ Access all that good, but you could use Access as a GUI Front end to the MySQL backend. Just a thought.
If you are looking at doing that, I suggest you read up on MyODBC since that is what is needed to get the two to talk to each other. I have done this just to see how it is done and it seems to work 'ok'.
