OK, I need to ask a stupid question.

I normally run MySQL on Apache. I have a second machine [a laptop] which I can't get Apache to run on [the ports are restricted/closed]. Is there a way to run MySQL without a server like Apache underneath it?

I see MySQL coined a "database server"; have I overlooked that it really is a server by itself?
