Setup: MySQL 4.0.17 Source Install, Linux 2.4.20

I am trying to specify the locations of the lib, include, and share directories with the configure script. When I use a --prefix (as is mentioned in the manual in section 2.1.8) I get the locations such as lib/mysql, include/mysql, share/mysql. When I try to use the other options in the configure script namely "libdir=", "includedir=", and "datadir=" (as the below example shows) the locations do not change from lib/mysql, include/mysql, share/mysql.

Is there a reason why the configure script does allow you to set the directories with out the "mysql" sub directory for lib, include, and share?
