Whenever someone asks me "Where do I start learning linux?", I tell
them to install *whatever distro I'm currently using (FC3)* and then
learn to use the following commands:
  man
  apropos
  locate (or find)
As well as "Google is your friend."
That's a good place to start with Linux. You were on the right track
with the books too, although there are tons of good resources on the
net.

As for MythTV, I'm just getting started myself. I've got all the parts
installed in the box now, with the exception of my second PVR 250
which has not yet arrived. I'm using Jarod's guide, and it is really
working out well so far. I would highly recommend it.
I'm probably only about 50% done (guesstimate) and I've been working
on it for about 2 hours.

When you take the plunge, be sure to come back to the list, it's very
helpful, as long as you don't ask "Why isn't this a forum?". More than
likely I'll be posting some questions of my own in a few days.
