I spent a very long time with the same problem - 3 sound cards, 2 sets
of speakers - even headphones!

If I remeber correctly (knew I was going to forget) I think "alsactl
store" finally saved the mixer settings so I could get sound out of the
speakers. If that isn't it start looking for how to save alsa mixer
settings.

"Finished" my new myth install last night, and there's no sound. The
simple explanation might be that I didn't install alsa, trying instead
to get it to work with just the nvidia driver. So, I emerge'd
alsa-tools (it's a gentoo system) and loaded alsa
(/etc/init.d/alsasound start), and adjusted my sound settings using
alsamixer - but nothing. Now, I don't have alsa in my "USE" flags, so
mayber that's it, but I'm not sure what else to try next to get this
working. Anyone?

If you don't have myth compiled with ALSA then you will need to have
OSS emulation. Without the alsa use flag it it will not have native
ALSA support. You will need the alsa module snd_intel8x0 (for nforce
boards) and snd_pcm_oss (for OSS emulation) to be loaded.

Try alsaconf and see if that gets you anywhere. Usually works for me.

When I was setting up my gentoo myth box on nforce I read about lots
of people having trouble with the nvidia sound drivers, so I went with
ALSA. It works beautifully on my system. Check the gentoo wiki
how-to, one of them has options for an nforce board.

I had the same problem last week. Re-emerging the alsa-related ebuilds fixed it, if I remember correctly.
