I think it's more of a co-incidence than actually a problem with the Blackberry. SMS is a cell provider service, not a Blackberry specific service, so it wouldn't make any difference what contract you are on as it isn't dependant in any way on Blackberry.
What is the actual error message that you are getting back from the GSM modem?
