I've been using colored gels over gel or acrylic pretty much indiscriminately for several years. I have found that the only thing you need to watch for is over-smoothing the acrylic before you apply the gel or under-curing the first layer of gel polish before moving to the next.
I have had a few clients that just did better if I did the fill with acrylic, then I very lightly buff with a 100/180 grit to be sure no lumps or bumps, then brush the dust off well, and go right for my first coat of gel polish. CURE COMPLETELY!!! Then do the next layer for intensity of color, etc. I also often use a thin white gel polish to do the white tips...smooth that over with a gel shine coat and... poof! you're done! Beautiful Pink & Whites. The pros, as I see it...my clients love that there's no chipping or wear and tear at the free edge. They do not have to sit still to dry or live with a smudged nail for 2 weeks in the case of an oops after they leave. They don't leave streaks of polish on their documents as they work. It's easy to tweak a color...just use a different color 2nd coat over the first to get a custom look. And they stay shiny!
