I do not wipe between layers. There are a couple things that help; 1- thin 
layers, if the layer you are drawing in is a smidge thick the design closes 
faster than you can draw in it 2- draw in bits and wipe your tool, so if I were 
drawing a square I would draw two sides, wipe of my tool then draw the other 
two, this gets rid of the excess polish you are carving out.

I am having the same problem.  The gel is leveling and filling in before I am 
finished drawing my design on one finger.  Are you wiping the tacky layer off 
of the first color before you apply the second?  I am not using Shellac though, 
I am using Star Eco.  I will have to try it with the YN Mani Q color and see 
if it works with that.
