asserting that "people support me in private email", and "lots of people
are actively interested in this, so it's on topic" - despite high volumes
of complaints over time.

This being a prime example of a personal assault thread, if we are to see
4 of the main posters who also show up.

Hm, no - a personal assault thread would be "Gadi's mother wears army
boots".

As I said, forget private emails. Public participation in threads and
public support. Nothing else.

... which gets back to "is this chatter on topic for the list" - and in
the case of nanog-l directly, I'd have to say no (which is why I'm glad
that this is on nanog-futures).

Beyond that, an earlier poster pointed out that most people just want a
list that's on topic for them, and keeps the proverbial sausage making
well out of sight.

Getting back to "participation and operational interest in certain
fields", as well as "on topic", I'd like to suggest that the MLC try
a slightly more aggressive tactic with posts about topics that are
well covered by other mailing lists (be that cisco-nsp, full-disclosure,
or greencard-lawyers ;>) - if the post covers something that's clearly
the purview of a different group, redirect it.

I'd suggest asking certain posters to stop advertising their various
endeavours on the list, but they seem to be generally challenged by
the idea of personal restraint. Perhaps a quarterly "Advertise your
projects" week would cut down on the routine spam.

cheers!
