I don't consider lacking support for newer transport protocols such as SCTP or DCCP a theoretical harm that is already caused by NATs nowadays.

Caused by NAT, or caused by the need to keep-state?

Caused by NAT---if the intermediate NA(P)T-Gateway does not explicitly support a "new" transport protocol, corresponding packets cannot be forwarded. Try using SCTP with your home NAT today and report the results.
