                 Associated Press -

Spokane _ A defunct uranium mine on the Spokane Indian
Reservation is being proposed for the Environmental
                 Protection Agency's Superfund cleanup list.

David W. Delcour, president of Dawn Mining Co., which owns
the 811-acre Midnite Mine site, said he was disappointed at
the proposed listing on the EPA's Superfund National
                 Priorities list.

If the site is listed, it would become eligible for federal
cleanup funds while the agency seeks to recover costs from
the current and former owners, EPA spokesman Bob
                 Jacobson said Tuesday from Seattle.

Delcour said Dawn Mining is committed to working with the
federal agency to ensure the reclamation is carried out
                 responsibly.

Newmont Mining Corp. of Colorado is the majority owner of
                 Dawn Mining Corp.

EPA officials in Seattle said the proposed listing is to
prevent
further harm to the environment from mine wastes,
                 contaminated ground-water and surface-water runoff,
Jacobson said. The wastes are contaminated by toxic heavy
                 metals and radionuclides.

A water treatment facility Dawn Mining installed in 1992 is
inadequate for all of the water that percolates through the
piles of uranium-bearing ore at the site, said David Bennett,
EPA national priorities list coordinator in Seattle.

The EPA will conduct studies to explore various remediation
plans, as well as propose cleanup options and costs. The
study is expected to take about a year, Bennett said.

The uranium mine is located on the Spokane Indian
Reservation, about eight miles from Wellpinit in Stevens
                 County.
