And now:Ish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: Dear Sir, Your correction noted and passed along. It is shameful what the City Council has authorized. How can a city support a statue of a man who was essentially the 15th century version of a local Hitler? this does not make sense. Ish Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 10:09 -0600 From: "Jim R. Onate was tried by the then existing Spanish law and found guilty of these atrocities. There is a boycott in effect against the city of Albuquerque until they come to the only rational conclusion that it is not honorable to honor an historical Hitler... The following message was just received...the boycott is well underway..please spread the word. Information concerning the original call for boycott follows the letter below. thanks, Ishgooda --------------------------------- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Falmouth drops the ball Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I hear that there are 30 or more professionals that have been cooling their heals all day today in Albuquerque waiting for their presenters to show up from the Falmouth Institute to present their program on Developing Better Relations With Indian Tribes. Bad timing to not show up; many of these people represent organizations (Colleges, the FBI, etc.) who were there to see if this would be a valuable enough presentation to hire the Falmouth to make presentations to their staff and management. Not a good show. Apparently the people are left with no answers as to whether or not the presenters will show up tomorrow. The good faith effort by the organizations was not matched by the Institute. What a shame. I am working with the Circle of Voices, which is a New Mexico grassroots organization. We have a nasty fight going on in Albuquerque and we need help and support. Here is what it is about: On May 13, 1614, Juan de Onate, a Spanish explorer, was found guilty of atrocities against New Mexico Indians under his own law by the Viceroy of Mexico. He was perpetually banished from New Mexico. The Albuquerque City Council, over the objections of Indians and human rights supporters, voted to erect a monment in Tiguex Park (which was set aside to honor Pueblo Indians) and include Onate. We have information to the effect that there will be a large figure of him with an Indian child leading the way. This is extremely offensive to Indians and human rights supporters. We need help on the issue. We are studying a human rights complaint which will address discrimination in public accomodations (i.e. an offensive figure that will drive people away from the park, promote divisiveness, and stand as a symbol to a war criminal) by way of national origin and ancestry harassment. The organization needs: * Law students and lawyers to research the legal issues * Psychologists and psychological experts to prove injury * Historians to show how and why Onate's image is unacceptable * Contributions to a legal defense fund * Protests to the City of Albuquerque: * Mayor Jim Baca, [EMAIL PROTECTED] * City of Albuquerque, P.O. Box 1293, Albuquerque, NM 87103 * City Council fax - (505) 768-3227 * Indian organization letters to the City and Chamber of Commerce indicating that they will boycott the City with conferences if the project goes forward We have recent victories to build on - The "Redskins" victory before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and an excellent decision of the Utah Supreme Court on "Redskins" vanity plates as being derogatory. The Circle of Voices has few resources but a lot of heart. The group will act soon and it needs all the support it can get.
