Subject: JESUIT PRIEST IN PRISON

Dear Friends of NAP:

This coming Wednesday May 26, a good Jesuit Priest will celebrate
his 72 Birthday inside a United States prison, serving time as a
political prisoner.

Father Bill Bichsel,s.j., founder of the Tacoma Catholic Worker,
SOA WATCH Northwest, and several other organizations that
through the years have struggle for Peace with Justice, is serving
an eighteen month sentence, for his participation in a peaceful
protest in front of the U.S. Army School of the Americas at Fort
Benning, Georgia.

Father Bix, as his friends call him, and four others, including
a religious woman in her 60's who has worked with refugees in
Chiapas during the Guatemalan war, a woman who works with
the homeless in New York, a retired college professor who also
works with the homeless in New York and a woman from Georgia,
changed the sign at the entrance to Fort Benning, to reflect the
reality that a school of assasisns was housed in the Fort.

Father Bix, placed his hand dipped in red paint making a hand
print on the wall, to signify that the hands of the US citizens are
stained with the blood of the thousands of innocent civilians
murdered by SOA graduates in Latin America.

The Jesuit murders in El Salvador, of 27 officers cited, 19
are SOA graduates.
The Massacre in SAn Sebastian, E.S. of 7 officers cited, 6 are
graduates of the SOA.
Las Hojas Massacre in E.S., of 6 officers cited, 3 are SOA
graduates.
The El Mozote Massacre in E.S., of the 12 officers cited, 8
are SOA graduates.
El Juntillo Massacre,E.S., of the 3 officers cited, 2 are SOA
graduates.
Sheraton Hotel murders, E.S., of the 3 officers cited, 3 are
graduates of the SOA.
The Murder of four US church women in E.S., of the 5 officers
cited, 3 are SOA graduates.
Bishop Romero's assassination, E.S., of the 3 officers cited,
2 are SOA graduates.

The above are only a brief example of the assassin graduates of this
infamous "school" on US soil and supported by US tax payers.

Father Bix and his friends called a press conference, and
painted the name of the school on the entrance wall to Fort Benning,
so that the people of the U.S. would know it is there.
They painted a sign, which was washed soon after even as they were
being arrested, yet they were given long sentences in order to
silence them, and silence those who might take their example
and continue to speak out and denounce this school of assassins
in our midst.

But their voices can be silenced, they continue to speak
from prison, and their voices from prison call the echo of other
voices.....ours.....to unite with theirs in calling for the closure
of this school of assassins.

As Father Bix celebrates his 72 Birthday in prison, we
invite you to :

1) Send him an e-mail greeting that we will print and
deliver to him.
2) Call or write the SOA WATCH OFFICE in DC for
information on how you can become involved in helping close
the SOA. SOA WATCH DC

3) Call President Clinton with the following message:

4) Father Bix's 40th anniversary in the priesthood is coming up in
late June. His community and friends here in the Pacific Northwest,
will have a big celebration and focus our attention on the reason why
he will be unable to join his own celebration and have to celebrate
his 40th anniversary in prison. The existence and funding of a
School of Assassins in the USA. If you are outside the US and wish
to join us by holding a celebration to honor Bix and support his
struggle to close the SOA, please write and let us know.

For PEACE WITH JUSTICE AND DIGNITY,

Susana Saravia
