Subject: FSU PROTESTS CONTINUE

The American Indian Movement of Florida (Florida AIM) continues its protests
of Florida State University's use of Indigenous peoples as a sports mascot on
September 11, 1999 at Doak Campbell Stadium beginning at 7:00PM

The position of Florida AIM as regards FSU is two fold.

1) We demand that FSU do something it has not in the 51 years since it became
the Seminoles.
Contact the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the
non-IRA traditional governments in OK and FL and ask permission to utilize
their name adhereing to any consensus decision. This simple respectful act
recognizing the sovereignty of the Seminole Nation has never been done with
any, let alone all 4 governmental bodies.

2) Remove the stereotypical, racist, and disgraceful depictions of Indigenous
peoples. Their mascot is no more Seminole than a Hungarian Gypsy dancer. It
looks like a Lakota who got lost in an Apache dressing room riding a Nez
Perce horse and clearly panders to the Hollywood stereotypes of Indian
peoples-and has to go. Indian peoples are Human Beings and not a sports
mascot for America's Fun and Games.

Also note that again Florida AIM members were ejected from a publicly owned
facility for holding an "offensive banner" that simply stated AMERICAN
INDIANS ARE A PEOPLE NOT A SPORTS MASCOT FOR AMERICA'S FUN AND GAMES" WE
intend to continue this.

Please no drugs no alcohol and no weapons.

Thank You
