Gujarat and Punjab government are being ‘marketed’ by APCO, a company that has
the distinction of working with some of the most brutal dictators. For them,
Gujarat is ‘Vibrant’ while Punjab is ‘Prorgressive.’
But are they?
And what happens when two state governments use the same PR agency? They are
both pushed to bankruptcy.
We Gujarat and Punjab have more in common than you think.
*Both are marketing themselves as pro-industry states but both are neck-deep in
debt and corruption. Punjab has stolen a march over Gujarat as one family has
almost exclusive right to do business in the state.
*Both believe that they don’t need a Lokayukta. Gujarat government took 9 long
years to appoint a Lokayukta while the Akalis appointed brother of a cabinet
minister as the state Lokayukta.
*Both the states now take loans to pay interests. Punjab now has a debt of
almost Rs 1 lakh Crore while Gujarat has a debt of Rs 1, 85,310 Crore. Even
state-run banks don’t want to lend to the Akali govt.
* Both the states had appointed convicted women leaders as Women Development
and Child Welfare Ministers. While the Gujarat Minister was accused of mass
murder, the Punjab Minister was accused of killing her own daughter.
