Quick suggestion. I can't check currently and maybe GEBCO already contains it, but a WMS of GEBCO combined with onshore elevation from SRTM30 might be a good idea. Just to start the list of suggested base map services.

FYI, We are currently at the test stage with a WMS delivering the GEBCO bathymetry gid. If it looks of interest contact Pauline Weatherall ([email protected]) Cheers, Roy. ________________________________________ From: [email protected] [[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jon Blower [[email protected]] Sent: 02 September 2009 12:07 To: Pascoe, Stephen (STFC,RAL,SSTD) Cc: NERC DataGrid Technical List Subject: [ndg-technical] Re: Reliable background maps for OpenLayers? Hi Stephen, If we're interested in some of the same datasets I wonder if we could share the burden of setting up some reliable base map servers (we could even perhaps run them in Google's cloud for extra scalability)? We'd be interested in Blue Marble, coastlines and perhaps other layers too. Maybe we could have a conversation about this sometime.
