Reference Guide

Despite prices for digital video cameras that put them almost on par with mid-range digicams, digital photography remains the most popular way to capture the events of our lives. I take hundreds of photos of my family, nature, and curiosities in the world around me. Managing all those images could easily become a full time job. Just try associating keywords with 50 or more photos in a sitting and you'll see what I mean.
A little time invested on the front end pays big dividends later when you want to find a photo of someone special or an important occasion. Being able to search based on keywords makes finding images easier than remembering what time of year IMG_0912.JPG was added to your image library. As soon as facial recognition becomes a standard feature, things will get even easier. In the meantime, cataloging images with text keywords is the best way to keep track of them.
Editing images is a labor of love. It's standard to be able to auto-fix color, red eye, and brightness/contrast goofs, but there is still a fair amount of work required to complete more complex editing operations. Fortunately, an affordable assortment of applications provide the necessary
means to make corrections, remove lens dust blemishes, and retouch things we wish weren't in the picture. For a sense of what's available, checkout the latest addition to the reference guide, Digital Photo Editing Tools.
