Highlighting the Reality of Same-Sex Marriage
—Michael Medved

Mike Liffrig, the Republican senate candidate in North Dakota, has unleashed one of the most controversial political ads of the season. In a brief TV spot highlighting his opponent's determination to block the Marriage Protection Amendment, Liffrig shows two smiling young men with bridal bouquets, kissing one another while the wedding march plays in the background.

This hard-hitting commercial helped bring attention to an underdog campaign, but the candidate also received condemnation as a "Nazi" and "hatemonger." He says he's puzzled by the reaction, since every gay wedding would inevitably include couples kissing and warm embraces by same-sex couples, and advocates of redefining marriage want government to endorse such physical and legal relationships.

The visceral reaction by most of the public at even a brief TV image of two males smooching highlights the underlying discomfort with the endlessly repeated claim that such contact is normal, and deserving of official support.
