When using XFree86 with it's own drivers there is a server log file generated. It is at /var/log/XFree86.0.log with XFree86/Linux and screen 0. If you can locate the log file for a run of your system, it will help us tell you what settings to change. Without some log, those of us not using Sun don't really have an idea what to suggest.
