Thanks for the tips,
I did turn to 8bpp mode, and it fixed the problem. However the stupid TFT is default at 800x600 so it looks ugly when I have to use 640x480 for 16bit color mode. I have to turn on NoStretch and LcdCenter to actually make it look half decent on the machine, but at least now programs are fairly usable.
