Was there ever a 60-80mm end-view Nixie made?
Certainly, the CD46 / LD-669 with 74mm, followed by the Burroughs B-7011 with 72mm. And there might be some more, who knows.
I feel that the nostalgic market driver would favor the vertical "tube" shape over end view tubes.
Probably. I just find end view tubes being somewhat discriminated against ;-)
