Hey Jack,
If the studio is wired correctly, you will not have any problems
interfacing unbalanced outputs to any inputs (balanced or not). We
have used a Series II (all unbalanced) in one of our studios for
roughly 15 years now and have never had any interfacing problems
(that is, until the Digidesign HD rig showed up). We use a plethora
of outboard equipment new and old, from "all pro" to tinker-toy design.
The only situation where we run into a wall is on a unit that has the
unusual combination of a non ground-sensing, transformerless output
which is floated from ground (+ and - signals not referred to the
shield connection, or earth ground). In that situation you can not
simply terminate the output with an unbalanced load by grounding "pin
2" or "pin 3" (like you could with a balanced output using a
transformer), nor can you lift pin 2 or 3 and use the opposite as
your unbalanced signal (as you could with an active balanced output,
where the signal is referenced to the same ground as the shield).
This is where you would have to build something, or add something to
your setup. There are only a few things out there that have that
problem though.
If you have to make any balancing mods on your board, balancing the
inputs would make the most sense. I wouldn't worry about messing
with the Neotek "sound". If you want to get all authentic about it
you can build a simple differential line receiver out of a TL074 (the
line input op amp on the series II, and maybe Series I). I would
just pick up something like this though.

My Series 1E has unbalanced outputs and doesn't like driving
anything that is unbalanced with pin 3 in the xlr being signal +.
The buss level drops when patched into such an input. This is
because doing this is basically shorting the output of the desk to
ground. Do you know for sure that both your desk and deck are on
the same page of the pin 2 / pin 3 story?
