If you have the same Furman I do with one stereo and four mono sends just wire a cable with bantams on one end to plug into the Elite's patch bay with the other going to the Furman master unit. That way you can plug in the headphone system while tracking but still use the Aux's for effects when mixing. I love how how the Furman lines up with the Elite (one stereo and four mono), its like they were made for each other. However, I hate the cat5 connectors, have to constantly 
fiddle with them during sessions to keep the headphones working.

   What do you mean by "sans mic lines"? The mic lines are the ones

that you absolutely HAVE to connect the shields on both ends.

In all of my (many) installations I have grounded both ends as the
Rane
note suggests and rarely had problems, notably computer multi

output

soundcards at -10dBu when wired with long cables.
The issue used to be with 'hum' pickup but now with everyone

packing

a
mobile phone and multiple RF transmitters (computers, switchmode
supplies in things etc) having screens grounded to chassis at BOTH
ends
is necessary to keep out these RF radiations. A possible diversion
could
be to use a capacitor to give HF ground but 'break' mains

frequency

hum
to help in extreme situations where ground lifting seems to be the
only
solution.
To begin with ground everwhere and if pushed it is quick to snip a
few
later.

an external patchbay for outboard gear so I am really

the concept of open ended shield on one side.

I understand the concept of star grounding and plan on



lifting my


individual components and sending the shield/patch bay



chassis

ground but the open ended patch bay adds a new twist to

this

    concept.

The wonderful thing about EDAC connectors is that they

are

easy
to reconfigure if they aren't right.
    I strongly reccommend that you have your cables

wired

    with the


sheild terminated at one end only (except the Mic

sources,

course).
