This does help. I spent a while today rewiring stuff and have some new issues. 
The a,b,c,d pots on each individual "in" (1-16) they are just a trim before it 
actually gets to the main a,b,c,d, where you can also adjust the volume? It 
seemed like it didnt have that much control over the overall volume, but a 
little. Also, the foldback send is going into another mixing board, (just 
because it has a good amount of headphone outs) but it is making a very noisy 
hum. Would you say that is the foldback send, or the wire. It is an old wire. 
Another thing......the studio monitors. Right now I am just using some chinese 
made stereo speakers. The volume is rather low. Any idea? Would better speakers 
be louder? I wouldnt guess that they would be, but I guess it is a possibility. 

Okay, and here is the major complication. The sub return.....I am going into 
the board, to the sub, to the computer. I am then returning/monitoring the 
computer plugin effects via the sub return. Is this the proper layout? I mean, 
I am on sub return 2, because 1 is a little busted on the back.....but my point 
is, it would seem like there was one major return, instead of returning it to 
an individual sub channel and then being able to hear it through the foldback. 
Jeez, I hope this makes sense. It is coming together. Should I be realizing 
that everyones signal flow is a little different. My main goal is to be able to 
give each musician a good headphone mix, where they can ask for more or less of 
anything. Ok thanks!

Auxiliary outputs, Echo sends and Foldback are basically the same things but 
given different names to help the operator work out what is going where. There 
may be some differences in actual routing, maybe fixed pre or post the fader 
sends for example.
ER echo Return is simply a nicely labelled control to bring a signal from your 
echo unit (almost definitely not in the desk) back onto the stereo mix.
Foldback outs are usually fed to headphone amplifiers or maybe speakers (like 
stage wedges).
Some 'Foldback' desks can end up having more output paths than input channels, 
a kind of 'un-mixer' and is effectively a matrix with pots on each path.
Having a load of foldback outs can be handy if you have several bits of 
outboard FX to use.

foldback thing so each player can monitor/adjust what they are hearing the 
other players doing. 
I have the signal going to the computer, and I have it returning to the 
board,but the affects I use on the computer are not being heeard when I return 
it back to the board. I would ideally like the musician to be able to play and 
in real time hear what this, in essense, is a piece of outboard gear is adding 
to the sound. 
 
I hope this makes sense. If anyone would just want to tell me their signal flow 
choices, that would be informative too. It just seems that now with the 
foldback in the picture, the signal is being split up in so many places, and I 
am kind oflosing track of what is actually in control of the signal going out. 
Also, like I said I cant seem to understand why the signal going to the comp. 
is not playing the added affects in real time on the foldback mix.
