I'm scanning using blocks consisting of 20 ip-addresses and still
I get hangs.

Is there a way to find out what plugin is starting to run when
it hangs? Or is this hang caused by something internal
(not plugins?)

now I'm seeing this as the last message from nessus:
alibaba_tst.nasl against 123.123.123.123 none of the required ports are open (this is
not an error)

I'll try to see whether it hangs always at the same spot when scanning
the same address block. If there is a way to get some information
which could help debuging the problem, I'm willing to help.
