The secret was to install BISON and FLEX and once I had those, run a `make distclean` 
on libnasl and nessus-libraries and start from scratch.  Thanks to those who mailed 
me.  As the FAQ says, deleting config.cache and rerunning ./configure isn't enough.

I also think it's worth giving applause to http://www.sunfreeware.com/ for providing 
sun packages so I don't have to bust my hump to get all the GNU stuff installed 
correctly in Solaris.
