Good morning, A huge thank you to everyone who replied with help. As I was running Slackware 8.1 I did indeed need to install the xfree86-devel-4.2.1-i386-2.tgz package.
Everything is now up and running...and scanning for that matter. Thanks again for the quick and accurate advice!
