So if you type 'which gcc' the directory that is returned is in your PATH?
here's mine (10.2.6):

faye% which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc
faye% echo $PATH
/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin

I'm not trying to compile it now, so I can't confirm my success/failure with it...
