I fixed the issue by upgrading to v2.2.4. After the upgrade my scans started working again.

It was fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling nessusd and the client. Most baffling. Worth a shot if tcpdump doesn't give any clue. Anyways, if anyone encountered this problem and fixed it without doing a reinstall please let me know.
