I decided to take a look at services running and "lo and behold" Nessus 3.0 is starting at startup.

Which explains the error I was getting when attempting to manually start Nessus.

This is a change from Nessus 2.2.6 that I don't recall being stated in the Nessus 3.0 documentation. Not sure why the change to a default auto startup rather than a manual startup. I'll be re- configuring for a manual startup.

Nessus 2.x is not a package -- therefore it does not start at bootup since it does not really integrate with your local operating system. Nessus 3.x on the other hand is a real package for the supported OSes and therefore does contain a proper init.d script.

To disable autostart, simply do chkconfig nessusd off (RPMs) or chmod -x /usr/local/etc/rc.d/nessusd.sh (FreeBSD)
