A school in Almaty is opening the online world to the deaf and hearing impaired in central Asian republic of Kazakhstan. The Almaty School for the Deaf has worked with a US Government agency and local businesses to develop computers and internet courses. Several of the school's students recently attended the first of several national training sessions for deaf teenagers and adults in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 10:38:16 -0600 From: Gleason Sackmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RESOUR> International Sign Language Links From: nikst <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 20:34:14 +0400 (MSD) http://prc.csun.edu/Content/Links/isl.asp There are at least 20 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States. This large population is served by more than 10,000 postsecondary (post high school) institutions -- from universities to vocational schools and seminaries. Current federal statutes require all programs and services of these institutions to be accessible to people with disabilities. Consequently, institutions may be confronted with new challenges when they serve their first deaf or hard of hearing student. The Postsecondary Education Programs Network (PEPNet) and the PEPNet Resource Center (PRC) was established in 1997 to provide information and technical assistance to postsecondary institutions serving people who are deaf and hard of hearing. PRC is a federally-funded consortium created to support these postsecondary institutions in their efforts to attract and serve deaf and hard of hearing people. Although the PEPNet Resource Center (PRC) was created to serve institutions, our on-line catalog of materials can be used by the general public as a starting place to find information about a wide variety of issues related to deaf and hard of hearing people. http://prc.csun.edu/ The general public is welcome to visit PRC, located on the campus of California State University, Northridge in Jeanne M. Chisholm Hall at the National Center on Deafness on the second floor in Room 231. Hours are from 9 AM to 4:30 PM PST. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 11:13:05 -0600 From: Gleason Sackmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RESOUR> NetFirst-L: National Poetry Month From: "Myers,Julia" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 11:10:53 -0500 Subject: NetFirst-L: National Poetry Month April is National Poetry Month! Here is the latest scoop! Bloomsbury Publishing is set to make a landmark announcement that the eagerly-awaited fifth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, will be on bookshelves by the end of May, 2002. "We didn't want to reveal that it was in editing," explained Stuart Brentwood, an editor at Bloomsbury, when asked why the public had been given no previous notification that the book was complete, "because, quite frankly, we didn't want schoolchildren beating down our doors. We'll give a definite date at tomorrow's press conference." Brentwood refused to answer questions about the content of the novel. "We've all read it, and it's utterly fantastic," he enthused. "Especially the part where Harry joins up with Volde-oops, I shouldn't have said that." Stuart went on to stress that though the book is the most highly anticipated tome of the century, expectant readers shouldn't get too excited. "Here in England, April Fool's Day ends at noon," he said. "But in America it goes all day long. It's still going in some parts of the world. And I'd be wary of anything I heard today."
