Teach Kids to be Movie Critics with New Moon's Free Curriculum

New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams is celebrating our 3rd annual
Turn Beauty Inside Out campaign.

This year's campaign and the curriculum focus on the messages about girls and
women in the movies. We're featuring learning activities for three age ranges:
grades 9-12, grades 5-8, and K-grade 4. The activities are easy to do and they
teach kids to be more media literate.
For this thoughtful curriculum on messages in the movies, go to
www.newmoon.org/TBIOD/index.html and click on TBIO Curriculum.

ATTENTION FEDERAL GRANTEES FOR COMMUNITY TECHNOLOGY CENTERS (CTC) AND THE
TECHNOLOGY OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (TOP)

Greetings,

On behalf of the Digital Empowerment Steering Committee,
(http://www.digitalempowerment.org/devel/about/default.asp) a working group
of over 100 national and local organizations working to expand opportunity
in the Digital Age, we write seeking your assistance in saving two critical
technology investment programs: the Technology Opportunity Program (TOP) and
the Community Technology Centers (CTC) initiative.

As you may know, President Bush, in his most recent budget request to
Congress, proposed to eliminate both the TOP and CTC community technology
programs. We believe these programs are critical to expanding opportunity
in the Digital Age and are launching a national campaign to save these
programs. A campaign website (http://www.digitalempowerment.org/devel/) is
being created to help coordinate the national and local events that will
take place as part of the campaign.

To help educate Members of Congress and the press about the benefits of
these crucial programs, we are compiling stories from grantees, individuals,
and communities who have benefited from these programs.

Please visit the Share Your Story section on the Digital Empowerment website
and fill out the form and encourage others who have benefited from these
programs to do so as well (choose your state and a list of TOP and CTC
programs will appear).

These stories will help our allies on Capitol Hill in our advocacy efforts
and it will also enable us to make a stronger case as we continue our
national public education campaign on behalf of expanding opportunity in the
Digital Age.

It is very important that we show the breadth of support and personal
enrichment from those who are benefiting from these critically important
community technology programs. Also, if news articles have been written
about your program, please forward a copy of the article to us either by
email ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or via fax at (202) 466-3435.

Finally, if your organization supports our efforts to save TOP and CTC,
please make sure it is included on our list of supporting organizations.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Greetings from D.C.

A new article online today from Library Journal that might be of interest to you.
http://libraryjournal.reviewsnews.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA20640
7&publication=libraryjournal

Title:
"Reference Is Better Than We Thought"

From the article, "A study of 12 libraries in California reveals that the
55 percent rule is wrong."

Article concludes with, "Our new study shows that we need to view reference
service as the same interpersonal process as was envisioned by Samuel Swett
Green ("Personal Relations Between Librarians and Readers," LJ 11/30/1876,
p. 7481). This is especially important as we move toward web-based, 24/7
virtual reference enterprises. We might make old Samuel S. Green proud!"

cheers,
gary

p.s. LJ has also placed "Best Reference Sources 2001" online today.

Sue,

Did you notice that the NETS website has lessons and units that match
the standards?

Also, you might consider project-based learning, using content-area
materials. Try searching for appropriate lessons at

Hi, there are a few sites where you can ask a scientist questions. The
one you might be thinking of is http://www.MadSci.org

I also did a quick search on google and found a science club that has a
list of ask a scientist sites. They even go have links to scientists of
specific areas of study, i.e. geologists and volcanologists.

And if you need some more inspiration, you can check out EducatingJane's
K-7 site that has links to some great science spots for elementary kids.

http://www.timetoteach.co.uk

I have written over 100 K-12 primary maths lessons. They closely follow UK
department of education lesson plans and are already being downloaded in their
hundreds by teachers who have found them useful in the classroom.

The lessons are all free, and easy to download and use. The lessons are all
complete lessons, containing most of the resources, including worksheets, that
you require.

If anyone should have any old K-12 maths lessons in PowerPoint or would like to
try and write them. I will always find room to upload and host high quality free
lessons.

In addition the site contains well over 100 links to other primary maths
resource sites from around the world.

I hope everyone enjoys their visit to the site and comes back more than once.
