As you may know, President Bush, in his most recent budget request to Congress, proposed to eliminate both the TOP and CTC community technology programs. We believe these programs are critical to expanding opportunity in the Digital Age and are launching a national campaign to save these programs. A campaign website (http://www.digitalempowerment.org/devel/) is being created to help coordinate the national and local events that will take place as part of the campaign. To help educate Members of Congress and the press about the benefits of these crucial programs, we are compiling stories from grantees, individuals, and communities who have benefited from these programs. Please visit the Share Your Story section on the Digital Empowerment website and fill out the form and encourage others who have benefited from these programs to do so as well (choose your state and a list of TOP and CTC programs will appear). (http://www.digitalempowerment.org/devel/share_your_story/) These stories will help our allies on Capitol Hill in our advocacy efforts and it will also enable us to make a stronger case as we continue our national public education campaign on behalf of expanding opportunity in the Digital Age. It is very important that we show the breadth of support and personal enrichment from those who are benefiting from these critically important community technology programs. Also, if news articles have been written about your program, please forward a copy of the article to us either by email ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or via fax at (202) 466-3435. Finally, if your organization supports our efforts to save TOP and CTC, please make sure it is included on our list of supporting organizations. (http://www.digitalempowerment.org/devel/background/support.html) Thank you very much for your assistance. A new article online today from Library Journal that might be of interest to you. http://libraryjournal.reviewsnews.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA20640 7&publication=libraryjournal Title: "Reference Is Better Than We Thought" From the article, "A study of 12 libraries in California reveals that the 55 percent rule is wrong." Article concludes with, "Our new study shows that we need to view reference service as the same interpersonal process as was envisioned by Samuel Swett Green ("Personal Relations Between Librarians and Readers," LJ 11/30/1876, p. 7481). This is especially important as we move toward web-based, 24/7 virtual reference enterprises. We might make old Samuel S. Green proud!" cheers, gary p.s. LJ has also placed "Best Reference Sources 2001" online today. http://libraryjournal.reviewsnews.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA206386 Looking for More News, New Sites, Search Tips? They closely follow UK department of education lesson plans and are already being downloaded in their hundreds by teachers who have found them useful in the classroom. The lessons are all free, and easy to download and use. The lessons are all complete lessons, containing most of the resources, including worksheets, that you require. If anyone should have any old K-12 maths lessons in PowerPoint or would like to try and write them. I will always find room to upload and host high quality free lessons. In addition the site contains well over 100 links to other primary maths resource sites from around the world. I hope everyone enjoys their visit to the site and comes back more than once. Dr P.
