The Spring 2002 Monster Exchange Project is ready for YOUR classroom. Join the
FREE project that thousands of students' worldwide have participated in!

Signup begins immediately at...
http://www.monsterexchange.org and is only open to the first 500 schools!

What is THE MONSTER PROJECT?
"Students try to communicate an original monster image into another child's
mind
using writing skills and technology."

PROJECT COORDINATOR'S NOTE: This project depends on the use of the World Wide
Web.

Everything you want and need to know such as: "What is the Monster Exchange
Project?, What does the project offer to the student and teacher?, How does my
school, classroom, or "home schooler" participate?, Do I need to be a computer
genius to participate?, and, "What equipment do I need to have?" can be found
at:
http://www.monsterexchange.org

To successfully participate in this project, Internet tools such as a chat
room,
mailing list, and partner matching, have been designed to help make teachers
and
students successful. tools can be seen at the above web address. Knowledge of
HTML is not required to publish in the monster galleries or for any other
features of this project. Please note, however, that you do need to be able to
save student drawings in either GIF of JPG format to successfully upload
drawings to the Monster Galleries. There is information on the site detailing
instructions on exactly what to do. You also need to make sure you have either
Netscape 2.0 or higher or Internet Explorer 4.0 to participate. Please read the

project information pages before committing your classes to the project.

Dates: Registration begins immediately. The project starting date is April 1,
2001 and continues through June 15, 2002, the closing date for the additions to

the monster galleries. Sign up will be limited to the first 500 schools.

Grade Levels: K-12

PLEASE NOTE: Illustration content drawn by the students should be appropriate
for cross cultures and suitable for children of all ages. Example:
Illustrations with blood and weapons may be inappropriate for children.

Objectives:
Objectives: to use writing process/skills to communicate a drawing of
student-created monster into detailed written descriptions that students from
cooperating schools read to duplicate the original drawing as closely as
possible. The real challenge is that the remotely drawn monster is created only

from reading the description! At the end of the project, both the original and
duplicate drawings are digitized and published on the web in the Monster
Exchange Galleries so that participants can see the resulting drawings for
comparison. Evaluation of student work: write a final email message to the
partner class discussing the differences between each of the student's work.

There is a great new media literacy site launching on PBS KIDS next
Monday. You can see the preview page at:

http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit

Don't know if you also know that the PBS TeacherSource site has added a
new category just for us! It is one of the links off the left sidebar:

Very cool, to be recognized as a major audience!

There's a book of urban legends called Spiders in the Hairdo by David
Holt and Bill Mooney that was on our state recommended list this year.
It was on the young adult list but may be adaptable for younger kids.
Hope that helps!

http://netsquirrel.com/combatkit/

Don't know quite what to expect out of teaching this to 4th and 5th
graders. I have a hard time convincing some adults that things are not
true, but are an urban legend.

This site may help you out.

http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/

There is a book called "Alligators in the Sewer" that could be useful.
You understand I don't recommend the book in its entirety for that age,
but she could use parts of it selectively. Also the hoax debunking
sites mentioned frequently on LM_NET.

Hi: I have some good links on one of my web pages, she might get some
neat info off of one of these:

http://mhsmediacenter.homestead.com/UrbanLegends.html

 >I have a book from Schlolastic titled Spiders in the
Hairdo which is a collection of Urban Legends. I have
been reading them to my 7th graders. This book is not
appropriate to put on the shelf so you have to read
ech story and see which you would like to use. There
are at least a dozen you could use. You can either
read them or tell them..Tthe book begins with an
explanation of an Urban Legend. If necessary I could
copy some and send them to you if you can't find this
book. (copywrite- what's that?)

seems to me that Muse magazine had a whole article and excerpts on urban
legends a year or two ago that was really fun for the kids. I can't
remember the exact date. Hope this helps

I would go to http://www.snope.com for ideas. They have so many categories...
you can probably build a lesson from those ideas.

have a book entitled Too good to be true: the colossal book of urban
legends by Jan Harold Brunvand published by W.W. Norton ISBN
0-965-010492.
It might be a good print source.

There is a graphic novel, entitled (I believe) "The Big Book of Urban
Legends," which is a great illustrated compilation of urban legends.
They are short enough to be photocopied and distributed as "short articles"
for students to read. I am not certain about the appropriateness of the
material, but from what I remember, it was OK.

I do urban legends as part of my folktale unit. I talk about how
folktales are spread...and when and where I heard some of the
stories...and how they are passed on, because they will tell others the
stories. It's a good way to get across how folktales have been passed
down through the centuries

I did a web site with lots of links for my fifth grades as a culmination
of their mystery unit. A couple sites on it might be useful to you.
Museum of Unnatural History and Museum of Hoaxes. Perhaps there will be some
others you will find useful.
To get to it, go to the library site (below) and click on Mystery Links
