Have you read Failure to Connect by Jean M. Healy? She raises some very
interesting questions about the quality of learning experiences and whether
or not computer use benefits children in the ways we might want. She looks
at computer use and school success and also social success. It is
definitely worth a read.

Here is an interesting review of her book:

National Science Teachers Association and the University of Maryland Partner
to Bring Online Professional Development Program to Science Teachers

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has announced that the
University of Maryland College of Life Sciences has joined the NSTA
Institute to bring middle and high school science teachers a content-rich
program with a concentration in biology and a planned concentration in
chemistry via the Internet. Created specifically for the practicing science
teacher, the 30-credit interdisciplinary graduate program gives teachers the
opportunity to improve their science knowledge and immediately apply it to
their classrooms. The Master of Life Sciences is the first online graduate
program of its kind in the nation created specifically for working teachers.
Non-degree-seeking students also may enroll for up to 12 credits.

The University of Maryland program will be part of the NSTA Institute, NSTA'
s professional development initiative to support quality teaching. The
Institute links all of the Association's professional development activities
and is providing a framework for diverse programs, including online courses
and site-based topical conferences and workshops. The University of
Maryland is the third major provider to join the Institute. The other
providers include the National Teachers Enhancement Network at Montana State
University and the JASON Foundation for Education.

NSTA will feature the University of Maryland program which is developed and
taught by the university's faculty. Four 10-week terms are offered each
year. Admission is based on satisfactory performance on an online
comprehensive entrance examination or completion of the introductory course,
Concepts of Modern Biology, with a grade of B or better. No GRE scores or
thesis are required and students can register for the entrance exam at any
time. Courses include concepts of modern biology, chemical ecology,
principals of chemical biology, and modern molecular genetics. All courses
will be offered on a rotating basis.

To register for a course, or for more information, visit the NSTA Web site
at www.nsta.org/institute; call the University of Maryland registration and
information line 1-877-989-SPOC; or visit
www.e-learning.umd.edu/old_index.html.

The Arlington, VA-based National Science Teachers Association is the largest
professional organization in the world promoting excellence and innovation
in science teaching and learning for all. NSTA's current membership
includes more than 53,000 science teachers, science supervisors,
administrators, scientists, business and industry representatives, and
others involved in science education.

I'm pleased to announce that the University of Chicago will host the Web
Institute for Teachers 2002 (WIT), an intensive 4-week professional
development experience for K-12 teachers, administrators, and curriculum
developers.

Now in its sixth year, WIT has been recognized by the International Society
for Technology in Education (ISTE) as an exemplary program at the highest
level of professional development for teachers.

Two strands are offered: Using the Web in the Classroom, for teachers just
beginning to learn how to use the Web with their students, and Creating a
Curriculum Web, for teachers with moderate to advanced computer experience
who are ready to learn how to use Dreamweaver to create complete web sites
to support curriculum units.

* Using the Web in the Classroom: for teachers with some experience
using computers for personal productivity. Learn how to search the web,
evaluate educational materials, and create a classroom home page. (This
strand was formerly known as "Basic".)
* Creating a Curriculum Web: for teachers with moderate to high
levels of experience using computers for personal productivity and some
experience using computers with students; must have computer at home; must
have active email account. Learn how to create a complete curriculum web,
including lesson plans, links, and teaching guide. (This strand was
formerly known as "Advanced.")

For Chicago Public School teachers, Lane Promotional Credit is available
for an additional $20 fee. For Illinois teachers involved in
Recertification, 16 Continuing Education Units are available to be applied
to either the "technology" or subject-matter emphasis of the plan.

Room and board is not normally provided to participants, but those seeking
housing during the Institute can be directed to on-campus and off-campus
housing sources.

Tuition is $1200.
